Event Production at Old Sessions House Clerkenwell: Lighting & Stage Design in The Courtroom Bar

Old Sessions House is one of Central London’s most distinctive event venues — and with the right production, The Courtroom Bar becomes an incredible setting for a wedding reception, party or late-night afterparty.

For this event, our brief was to transform the space after dark, using architectural lighting, DJ production and stage design to create a warm, atmospheric party environment while making a feature of the room’s extraordinary scale and historic detailing.

The result is a great example of what considered event production can do in a characterful London venue: not simply adding equipment to a room, but completely changing how the space looks, feels and functions once the party begins.

Lighting Design at Old Sessions House

Lighting has an enormous impact in The Courtroom Bar.

The room’s tall columns, decorative cornicing, arched glazing and high ceilings give us a brilliant architectural canvas to work with. For this event, we used rich amber and warm orange tones throughout the space, creating a dramatic evening atmosphere and drawing attention to the scale of the architecture.

Carefully positioned uplighting illuminated the columns from floor to ceiling, while light across the upper architectural details brought out features that can otherwise disappear after dark.

The extensive glazing adds another dimension. Light reflects through the windows and mirrors, creating layers of colour and depth throughout the room and allowing the lighting design to feel immersive from multiple viewpoints.

This is where professional event lighting design goes far beyond simply choosing a colour or placing uplighters around the edge of a room. Fixture choice, beam angle, intensity, positioning and colour all affect how the architecture reads — both to guests in the space and through the camera.

From Wedding Reception to Afterparty

For a Central London wedding, the transition from reception to evening party is an opportunity to completely change the energy of the event.

The Courtroom Bar at Old Sessions House lends itself particularly well to this.

As daylight disappears, lighting can transform the room into something warmer, darker and more intimate. The architecture remains visible, but the atmosphere shifts towards a late-night private members’ club or London party rather than a traditional wedding reception.

That transformation is particularly effective when the lighting, sound, DJ and staging have been designed together.

Rather than treating each technical element separately, we approach the room as a complete visual environment.

DJ and Stage Design in The Courtroom Bar

The DJ naturally becomes a focal point once the evening party begins, so their position and presentation needs to feel intentional.

For this event, the DJ area was incorporated into the wider lighting design, with contemporary linear lighting providing a striking contrast against the historic surroundings.

The juxtaposition works beautifully: clean, modern production against the ornate architecture of Old Sessions House.

Crucially, the equipment doesn't simply sit within the room. The stage design, DJ position, lighting fixtures and architectural lighting work together to establish a clear focal point and give the party its own identity.

From a practical production perspective, we also consider guest sightlines, dancefloor positioning, speaker placement and how the room will operate once it is full — ensuring the design works just as well at midnight as it did during installation.

Designing for the Whole Space

One of the most interesting things about producing events at Old Sessions House is that the experience of The Courtroom Bar begins before guests actually enter it.

Its huge glazed sections create fantastic views into the party from the surrounding spaces.

By lighting the room as a whole rather than concentrating solely on the dancefloor, the entire Courtroom becomes a glowing backdrop. From outside, guests can see the illuminated columns, chandelier, DJ lighting and movement on the dancefloor through the glass.

These sightlines are something we consider during the design process.

For weddings and high-end events in particular, we aren't only thinking about what guests see while standing on the dancefloor. We consider how the production photographs, how it looks through adjoining spaces, what guests see as they approach the room and how the atmosphere develops throughout the evening.

That attention to detail is what turns individual pieces of event equipment into a cohesive production design.

Wedding Production at Old Sessions House

For couples and wedding planners considering Old Sessions House for a Central London wedding reception, production is an important part of making the building work for the style and atmosphere of your celebration.

Our team can design and deliver the complete technical and visual production for an event at Old Sessions House, including lighting design, professional sound systems, DJ production, staging, dancefloors, draping and bespoke scenic elements.

Because these elements are designed together, we can create a much more cohesive result than simply supplying individual pieces of equipment.

Whether the brief is understated and elegant or a full-scale late-night party, our starting point is always the same: what should the room feel like when guests walk into it?

From there, we design the production around the architecture, guest experience and flow of the event.
